Graduation Gifts
Graduation gifts come at particular special occasions,
but they may represent many different aspects of the situation. For
instance, some are designed to show pride in the achievement of the
graduate. Others are given in celebration of the new worlds that are
now open to him or her.
In these ways, graduation gifts may emphasize the past, the future,
or both. Before giving such a gift, it is good to evaluate what aspect
of the event is most desirable to acknowledge. An item with school colors
will emphasize accomplishment in terms of the particular school. Sometimes,
people may wish to focus on what it means for the family to have a first
member to reach a particular achievement, such as a high school degree
or university doctorate. In these situations, a family heirloom may
be appropriate.
Graduation gifts which point toward the future are often more practical
items. For instance, someone who just completed music school may need
a new instrument. Many high school graduates receive gifts which will
aid them in living on their own for the first time.
